"The EU expresses its sincere condolences for the death of President Raisi and Foreign Minister Abdollahian, as well as other members of their delegation and crew in a helicopter accident. Our thoughts go to the families," Charles Michel wrote on the X (formerly Twitter) social network, early this morning.

The Iranian government confirmed today the death of Raisi and Amir-Abdollahian in a helicopter crash in north-western Iran, the wreckage of which was located without any survivors.

The helicopter carrying Raisi was located today on a mountain in north-western Iran, emergency services announced, admitting that they had little hope of finding survivors.

The aircraft crashed in the Kalibar and Warzghan area, in the East Azerbaijan province, in the north-west of the country.

The accident occurred on Sunday, when the delegation was returning from the border with Azerbaijan, where Raisi inaugurated a dam with his Azeri counterpart, Ilham Aliyev.

Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Azerbaijan offered help to Tehran, while the US President, Joe Biden, was informed about the incident, according to the White House, which did not provide further details.

Turkey sent 32 rescue teams and six vehicles, and the European Union activated the Copernicus rapid mapping service at Iran's request.
