A 72-year-old man who since Sunday night was barricaded with a firearm inside his house in Huétor Tájar, Granada, Spain, with his two grandchildren aged 10 and 12, killed the children and then took his own life.
According to sources from the Guardia Civil who confirmed the incident to EFE, the area remains isolated while that security force and the local police jointly investigate the circumstances of what happened and confirm the causes of the incident.
The alert was given around 9:40 pm (local time) on Sunday by neighbors who reported that the man, carrying a firearm and threatening his grandchildren, had barricaded himself in his house located on Alfredo Nobel street.
The Guardia Civil and the local police were immediately mobilized to the scene, the street was cordoned off and negotiations with the suspect began.
Sources close to the investigation confirmed to the Spanish news agency that the man killed the minors after an argument with his son-in-law, adding that one of the children died by asphyxiation and the other by gunshot wound.
The grandfather also took his own life by shooting himself with the gun, specifically a 12-gauge shotgun.
The main hypothesis is that the man acted due to an "emotional problem" caused by the deaths of his daughter, the children's mother, and his wife, "in an accident" two months ago, according to what sources from the City Council confirmed to 20minutos.
