Moscow, May 20, 2024 (Lusa) - Russian President Vladimir Putin paid tribute to Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash, describing him as a "remarkable politician" and a "true friend" of Russia.
"Ebrahim Raisi was a remarkable politician (...). As a true friend of Russia, he made an invaluable personal contribution to the development of good-neighborly relations between our countries [Russia and Iran] and made great efforts to raise them to the level of strategic partnership," the Russian President said in a message of condolences issued by the Kremlin.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also paid tribute to the memory of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, who also died in the same accident.
"President Raisi and Foreign Minister Amir-Abdollahian were true and trusted friends," Lavrov said in a statement.
Iranian rescue teams today recovered the remains of Ebrahim Raisi and the other eight passengers who were on the helicopter that crashed on Sunday in northwestern Iran, the Red Crescent announced.
The helicopter that was also carrying Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian crashed in the Kalibar area.
The accident occurred when the delegation was returning from the border area with Azerbaijan, where Raisi inaugurated a dam in which his Azerbaijani counterpart, Ilham Aliyev, participated.
