"As a result (of Ukrainian troops' activity) in recent days, throughout the week, we have strengthened our positions in the Kharkiv region," Zelensky said, quoted by the EFE news agency. "The occupier is failing to achieve its goal of dispersing our forces and weakening Ukraine on the (combat) front, which runs from the Kharkiv region to the Donetsk region," the Ukrainian president said. Zelensky also noted that Ukrainian forces are "destroying the occupiers" near the city of Chasiv Yar (Donetsk) and in other areas of the front. According to the head of state himself and other Ukrainian leaders, Moscow intended to take Chasiv Yar before May 9, with the aim of having a military conquest to present on that date, when Russia celebrates the anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany. So far, Chasiv Yar remains in Ukrainian hands. Despite having slowed its advance, Russia continues to try to gain ground on the two axes where it is attacking in the area, towards the cities of Vovchansk and Liptsi, where it is trying to destroy Ukrainian defenses with bombardments, according to the Ukrainian General Staff. Eleven Ukrainian civilians died on Sunday during Russian attacks throughout the Kharkiv region. The regional authorities declared today an official day of mourning. The Ukrainian General Staff also reported repeated Russian attacks in other areas of the Donetsk front. These attacks were reportedly repelled by Ukrainian forces. Russia is reportedly suffering more daily casualties than usual on the combat front. According to today's report from the Ukrainian General Staff, the Russian army lost 1,400 soldiers on the entire front in the last 24 hours, including dead and wounded. The daily number of casualties rarely exceeded 1,300 before the Russians attacked Kharkiv, across the border, ten days ago.
