"Official mourning has been declared for the death of the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, who died in an unfortunate accident after the helicopter carrying him crashed," the Lebanese Council of Ministers said in a statement.
For the next three days, flags will be flown at half-mast at "all" official institutions and municipalities in Lebanon, while the usual radio and television programming will be modified to adapt to the "painful event," the statement explained. Lebanon maintains good relations with Iran, one of the foreign powers considered to have the greatest influence in the country, largely due to the close collaboration between Tehran and the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah. In a statement, the Lebanese Shiite movement today lamented the death of Raisi, recognizing him for his work as "protector of the resistance movements and their 'mujahidin' in all the positions of responsibility he held." The Lebanese group is part of an informal anti-Israel alliance led by Tehran, known as the Axis of Resistance, whose various members maintain fronts of support for the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, in the context of the war that began seven months ago in the Gaza Strip. Hezbollah, which leads one of these fronts against Israel from southern Lebanon, allegedly receives weapons and logistical support from its Iranian allies. Iranian rescue teams today recovered the remains of Ebrahim Raisi and the other eight passengers who were on the helicopter that crashed on Sunday in northwestern Iran, the Red Crescent humanitarian organization announced. The helicopter carrying the Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, also crashed in the Kalibar and Warzghan area, in the East Azerbaijan province, in the northwest of the country. A few hours earlier, the Iranian government confirmed the death of Raisi, adding that the disaster will not cause "any disruption in the administration" of the country.
