An Arizona man was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in the 2017 death of his wife, who was buried alive in a shallow grave near their home. David Pagniano pleaded guilty before his trial was set to begin and allowed a judge to determine his sentence without a plea agreement, the Associated Press reported . The 62-year-old was also sentenced to 16 1/2 years in prison for kidnapping, forgery and fraud, the Yavapai County Attorney’s Office said. Sandra Pagniano, 39, vanished while in the middle of divorcing her husband in May 2017. The couple was still living together in their home with their two young daughters at the time. Her body was found bound and gagged with duct tape inside a hole in the ground in a rural area north of Prescott. The county medical examiner determined that Sandra had been buried alive. Evidence showed that Sandra Pagniano had fought vigorously while she was in the grave and may have been conscious for up to five minutes.
