Shalva Papuashvili, also a member of the Georgian Dream -- Democratic Georgia party, told reporters on Monday that "it is clear that the parliament will override this veto." Papuashvili said that the parliament will hold a session to discuss the issue next week. The new law, passed by parliament earlier this month, requires any non-governmental organization (NGO) or media outlet that receives more than 20% of its funding from abroad to register in Georgia as an “organization acting in the interests of a foreign state” and submit to increased government oversight. Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili vetoed the controversial legislation on Saturday, saying it obstructs the country’s European integration process and demanding its immediate repeal. The so-called “Foreign Influence Transparency Law” has sparked mass protests in Tbilisi in recent weeks, with the opposition saying it paves the way for the persecution of political parties and NGOs critical of the government. Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Monday claimed that over 60% of the population supports the law and “the common sense of the majority of the population should prevail,” though he did not say where the figure came from or provide any evidence to support the claim. Garibashvili also accused Zurabishvili of “blocking any space for discussion.” The bill has drawn sharp criticism from European Union (EU) officials. In a joint statement on Sunday, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed their “deep regret” over “the decision by the Georgian government and the ruling party to move away from this path [of EU integration], acting against shared European values and the aspirations of the Georgian people.” The United States has also spoken out against the legislation, while Russia has denounced Western interference in the country’s internal affairs.
