Thermometers at the weather station in Najafgarh, in the Indian capital, recorded the highest temperature ever in the Asian country on Sunday, at 47.8 degrees Celsius.

It was followed by the city of Agra, home to the famous Taj Mahal monument, with 47.7 degrees, India's Meteorological Department (IMD) said today.

"This is the highest maximum temperature of this summer season," the IMD stressed in its latest bulletin.

Meteorological authorities have issued a red heat warning for both New Delhi and the northern states of Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Chandigarh, where temperatures ranged between 43 degrees and 46 degrees Celsius on Sunday.

"Heat wave to severe heat wave conditions are very likely to continue over northwest plains of India and heat wave conditions over north Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat state during next five days," the IMD said.

Extreme weather events such as heat waves have a direct impact on people's health and, according to a study published in 2021 by Indian meteorologists, more than 17,000 people have died in the last 50 years due to these periods of extreme temperatures.

The rise in temperatures also coincides with the general elections in India, which began on April 19 and end on June 1, threatening to reduce voter turnout.

The Indian capital votes next Saturday, in the sixth and penultimate phase of the general elections, when a thermal sensation of 47 degrees Celsius is expected.

Today is the fifth phase for the election of 49 seats in the lower house of parliament in six states and two unified territories.

The next phases of the electoral act take place on May 25 and June 1, with the vote count scheduled for June 4, when the results of the elections, in which the current Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, is seeking his third term, should also be known.
