A three-hour, late-night session of the U.S. House Oversight Committee Thursday night devolved into shouting and chaos, with insults even hurled over “false eyelashes.” The New Yok Times reports that members of the Republican-led panel gathered in a Capitol hearing room after 8 p.m. ready for a fight — with some audience members reportedly bringing alcoholic beverages to enjoy the show. The late hour was because many Republicans had traveled to Manhattan to show their support for former President Donald Trump at a court hearing where he faces criminal charges related to hush-money payments to a porn star. Back in Washington, the lawmakers were meeting for a more serious and somber reason: to debate whether to hold a Biden administration official in contempt of Congress. After voting to hold Attorney General Merrick B. Garland in contempt — a move that the panel’s chairman, Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.), had proudly touted in a fundraising appeal earlier in the day — the session descended into a food fight. Leading the charge was Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, the right-wing Georgia Republican known for her penchant for incendiary remarks, who took aim at Rep. Jasmine Crockett, a Texas Democrat who frequently spars with her on the House floor. After an initial exchange of words, Greene went after Crockett’s appearance, setting off the real chaos. “I think your fake eyelashes are falling off as you’re talking,” Greene said, mocking her makeup. The crack prompted Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) to demand that Greene’s words be “stricken” from the record, a formal rebuke that would have barred Greene from speaking for the rest of the session. After much back-and-forth, Greene agreed to have her words stricken, but she refused to apologize. “I’m not apologizing,” she insisted. It’s worth noting that even if the contempt recommendation against Garland is approved by the full House, it would still need to be taken up by the Senate. Greene, a freshman, has courted controversy since arriving in Congress for her embrace of conspiracy theories, including support for the pro-Trump QAnon movement.
