An Air India Express Airbus A320 had just taken off from Bengaluru, India, on Saturday on a flight to the southern city of Kochi in Kerala when one of the plane's engines caught fire.

In a video posted on social media, panic can be heard among passengers as the fire intensifies. "Please be seated!" a flight attendant can be heard saying over the screams of passengers. "Everything is under control," he added.

The video then cuts out and later shows passengers leaving the plane and walking across the tarmac.

The airline confirmed in a statement to India Today that the pilots "elected" to return to the Bengaluru Kempegowda International Airport and "carried out a precautionary landing" after the engine fire.

The plane was evacuated after landing, with no injuries to any of the passengers, it added.

"We regret the inconvenience caused and are working towards providing alternate arrangements for our guests to reach their destination at the earliest. A detailed investigation will be carried out in conjunction with the regulator to ascertain the cause," Air India Express said.

Air India Express is a low-cost, short-haul subsidiary of the flag carrier Air India.
