“The Secretary-General is saddened by the death of Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and their colleagues in a helicopter crash on 19 May,” said Guterres’ Spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, in a statement.
The UN chief extended his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the crash, as well as “to the Government and people of the Islamic Republic of Iran”.
Iranian rescue teams recovered the bodies of Raisi and the eight other passengers who were on board the helicopter that crashed in northwestern Iran on Sunday, the country’s Red Crescent Society said on Monday.
The helicopter, which was also carrying Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, went down in the Kalibar and Varzaqan area of East Azerbaijan province, in the northwest of the country.
Hours earlier, the Iranian government confirmed Raisi’s death, adding that the crash would not cause “any disruption to the administration” of the country.
