The story began when the Italian seamstress, who worked in New York, USA, was chosen by her boss to be portrayed in a sculpture that would adorn the company's entrance. According to UPI, Maria had her entire body covered in plaster, with only two straws in her nose so she could breathe.
The sculpture was in the Manhattan tailor shop for several years, but eventually disappeared when the company moved. The woman believed that the sculpture had been destroyed. However, she was surprised when her granddaughter, Jennifer Pulsone Heppner, discovered that it was intact after all.
Jennifer and her husband, Brian, began a search for the sculpture that turned out to be short. The couple eventually discovered that the sculpture of a woman sewing was, after all, for sale in an antique warehouse in Pennsylvania.
The family ended up buying the artwork for $600 (about 550 euros) and donating it to a museum.
"This is a piece of me. It is a great honor for all Italians and for me, who feel like a princess. It is a great moment", said the elderly woman at the inauguration of the work.
