The detainee was questioned "as a suspect in the charges of omission of the duty to provide assistance resulting in death and six charges of minor omission of assistance," the Budapest police directorate reported today, in a statement released on the 'online' page.

The captain is suspected, according to the same information note, of "not alerting the crew of his own vessel after the accident, not applying the rescue protocol, not taking any action to rescue the people who needed it and not stopping the vessel".

The police did not reveal the identity and nationality of the detainee, but various 'media' indicated that he is an experienced navigator and close to retirement age.

The defendant did not admit the crimes he was charged with.

Apparently, the cruise ship he was commanding, a Swiss-flagged "floating hotel", continued on its way after the collision that occurred on Saturday night into Sunday near the town of Veroce, 40 kilometres north of the Hungarian capital.

With 110 passengers on board, the ship had set sail from Budapest bound for the German city of Passau, near the border with Austria.

The vessel was intercepted on Sunday by the Hungarian police, near the city of Komaron, about 90 kilometres from the scene of the accident. The authorities confirmed lateral damage to the hull of the vessel.

An investigation has been opened to clarify the circumstances of the accident and 25 people have been questioned so far.

Rescue teams continued search operations today for three men and two women who, along with three other people, were in the motorboat when it collided with the cruise ship.

The civil protection organisation considered the chances of these people being found alive to be slim, since more than 24 hours had passed since the collision.

Two people died and a third managed to swim to shore, being hospitalised with head and collarbone injuries.
