"You are the leader. You are the one to blame," the protesters shouted, many of whom had traveled from other parts of the country to join a slow-moving caravan that caused delays at the entrance to the city.

Also taking part in the demonstration, which coincided with parliament reconvening after a six-week spring recess, were relatives of Israeli hostages held in Gaza who are demanding a ceasefire deal with the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas for the release of their loved ones.

Protests have been held almost every weekend in various parts of Israel since the current conflict in the Palestinian enclave began on 7 October 2023, calling for Netanyahu to resign and for early elections.

Today's demonstration came as the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khan, announced he was seeking arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his defence minister Yoav Gallant over the Gaza war, as well as for Hamas chiefs Yahya Sinwar, Mohammed Al-Masri and Ismail Haniyeh.

Reacting to the move, Netanyahu accused the institution of "anti-Semitism" for equating "the monsters of Hamas with the soldiers of the IDF, the most moral army in the world."

More than 35,500 people, mostly children, women and elderly, have been killed by Israeli forces since 7 October, and around 80,000 injured. An estimated 10,000 bodies are still buried in the rubble with no access for rescue and medical teams, according to figures from the health ministry in the Gaza Strip.
