"In commending the souls of the deceased to the divine mercy of the Almighty and offering prayers for the grieving families and all those affected by this tragedy, I assure you of my spiritual closeness to the nation at this difficult time", the Pope wrote in English in a telegram addressed to Khamenei.

Iranian rescue teams recovered on Monday the bodies of Ebrahim Raisi and the eight other passengers who were on board the helicopter that crashed on Sunday in northwestern Iran, the Red Crescent aid organization reported.

The helicopter, which was also carrying Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, went down in the Kalibar and Warzghan area of East Azerbaijan province, in the northwest of the country.

The Iranian government confirmed Raisi's death, adding that the disaster will not cause "any disruption to the administration" of the country.
