Newborn baby found dead on board cruise ship, mother arrested

The baby's mother, who worked as a cleaner on the ship, has been arrested and accused of negligent homicide.
According to initial information reaching the authorities, the woman, a 28-year-old from the Philippines, is thought to have kept her pregnancy a secret, possibly for fear of losing her job.
When the baby was born, she is thought not to have asked for help from anyone, keeping it hidden in the cabin where she was staying and where the birth is thought to have taken place. In connection with the case, two other women who were sleeping in the same cabin have been arrested on suspicion of helping the woman to give birth and to hide the baby.
It is suspected that she may have caused the baby's death through negligence, by failing to give it proper care, including feeding. An autopsy has been ordered on the baby, whose date of birth has not yet been officially established, but is thought to have been two days ago.
On Sunday, the alarm was raised on the cruise ship when the newborn - who is thought to have been hidden in a locker for some of the day - stopped breathing. It was only then that the mother admitted what had happened and asked for help.
The captain then ordered the Italian coastguard to be notified. Patrol boats then boarded the cruise ship, taking police officers on board to arrest the women and recover the newborn's body.
The baby's mother was discharged from Grosseto hospital on Monday afternoon and was then taken to Sollicciano prison in Florence. The ship, after some checks, then resumed its journey.
