A woman has died after being attacked by her two pet American Bully XL dogs on Monday.

The incident happened in Hornchurch, on the outskirts of London, the UK, Sky News reports. Police were called at 1.12pm.

"The woman was treated by London Ambulance Service paramedics but, sadly, died at the scene," a Met Police spokesperson said.

Armed officers attended the incident "due to the nature of the threat", and the two dogs were "humanely destroyed".

"Prior to police arrival, the dogs had been contained within a room in the address. They did not leave the property at any time during the incident," the spokesperson added, revealing that the woman's family are being supported by police.

Since 1 February this year it has been an offence in England and Wales to own an American Bully XL dog without an exemption certificate. Those who are legally allowed to own the animals must have them neutered by law.

Owners must also microchip their dogs and keep them on a lead and muzzled in public.
