The U.S. State Department said it was unable to fulfill a request for assistance from Iran following the helicopter crash that killed the country’s president, Ebrahim Raisi, on Sunday.

“We were asked for assistance by the Iranian government. We made clear that we would offer assistance, as we would in response to any request from a foreign government in this kind of situation. We were not able to provide that assistance, largely for logistical reasons,” State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller was quoted as saying by the Reuters news agency.

Asked about the situation, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said: “The United States had no role in this incident whatsoever. I can’t speculate as to what may have caused it.”

Iranian rescue teams on Monday recovered the bodies of Ebrahim Raisi and the eight other people who were on board the helicopter that crashed in northwestern Iran on Sunday, the Iranian Red Crescent Society reported.

The helicopter, which was also carrying Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, came down in the Kalibar and Warzghan area of East Azerbaijan province, in the northwest of the country.

The Iranian government confirmed Raisi’s death but said the disaster would not cause “any disruption to the country’s administration”.
