The United States and Saudi Arabia are close to finalizing a bilateral defense agreement, the White House said, after a weekend of intensive talks between Washington and Riyadh.

The two countries are “closer than ever” to the agreement, which is “close to being finalized”, the White House’s National Security Council spokesman John Kirby was quoted as saying by Reuters.

The deal would involve the US moving forward with formal security guarantees for the Saudis and giving Riyadh access to more advanced American weaponry. In return, Saudi Arabia is expected to halt purchases of Chinese weapons and restrict Beijing’s investment in the kingdom.

White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan spoke to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and other Saudi officials over the weekend, where progress was made, Kirby said.

“We are very close to an understanding on the key elements. Of course, we will also need to work on the elements related to the Israelis and the Palestinians, which are a critical component of any potential normalization agreement”, a source familiar with the matter was quoted as saying by Reuters.

Getting Saudi Arabia to normalize relations with Israel, following similar deals with other Arab states, is a major diplomatic goal for US President Joe Biden.

Saudi Arabia has demanded security guarantees, which the US has said it is willing to provide, but it has also called for the creation of a Palestinian state, something Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, another US ally, has resisted.
