"We are sending a note of condolence to the Iranian government and people for the loss of the President and the Foreign Minister, which we deeply regret. We hope that there is no pretext for deepening the conflict that exists in that region," said José Maria Neves, in statements to Rádio de Cabo Verde, made during a visit to Portugal.

The Cape Verdean Head of State said he hopes "that this death will serve to create new opportunities for peace".

"We dramatically need peace in that region, a negotiated solution to the conflict that persists between Israel and Palestine and that entire region that is very troubled," he added.

"I hope that this death, which we deeply regret, opens the way for negotiation, for the search for peace and for there to be much more stability in that region," he concluded.

Iranian rescue teams today recovered the remains of Ebrahim Raisi and the other eight passengers who were on the helicopter that crashed on Sunday in northwestern Iran, the humanitarian organization Red Crescent announced.

The helicopter that was also carrying the Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, crashed in the Kalibar and Warzghan area, in the East Azerbaijan province, in the northwest of the country.

The Iranian government confirmed the death of Raisi, adding that the disaster will not cause "any disruption in the administration" of the country.
