Middle East. University accused of violating freedom of speech
Graduate student workers at the University of California, Santa Cruz went on strike today, joining a growing movement against public universities that they say are suppressing free speech for supporters of Palestine.

UAW Local 4811 represents 48,000 of those student workers, who work as teaching assistants, tutors, researchers and other academic workers across the University of California’s 10 campuses.
Organizers said the strike will not happen at all campuses at once, but will roll out over time.
Organizers are protesting the university administration’s response to pro-Palestinian demonstrations, including arrests on the Los Angeles, San Diego and Irvine campuses.
“The ball is in the UC’s court — and the first step they need to take is to drop all criminal charges and discipline against our members,” UAW 4811 President Rafael Jaime said in a statement.
