According to the organisation's jury, activist Amina Bouayach, who is also president of the National Human Rights Council of Morocco, was chosen "for her commitment to promoting human rights, gender equality and the prevention of torture at regional and continental levels".

In addition, the Council of Europe Prize also seeks to "recognise Amina Bouayach's involvement in the political campaign to abolish the death penalty, as well as her work to strengthen civil society structures in the Mediterranean region and North-South cooperation based on shared democratic values".

The Global Campus of Human Rights network, funded by the European Union (EU), is the other laureate in recognition of its "work to ensure accessible and quality human rights education and to foster North-South dialogue within a community of academics, students, lawyers and experts", explains the Council of Europe.

The prize, which has been awarded annually since 1995, honours commitment to the defence and promotion of human rights, democracy and the rule of law, as well as the development of intercultural dialogue and North-South solidarity, distinguishing two personalities or organisations.

The award ceremony will take place from 12:00 noon in the Senate chamber of the Assembly of the Republic, in Lisbon.

The list of North-South Prize winners includes some Portuguese figures, the last of whom was former President of the Republic Jorge Sampaio (in 2008), "for his deep involvement in the search for peace throughout the world".

The prize was also awarded, in 2003, to the former president of the Assembly of the Republic António de Almeida Santos, "for his outstanding career as a deputy and leader of the Portuguese Socialist Party", and, in 2000, to the former President of the Republic Mário Soares, "for his fight against dictatorship in Portugal".

The Council of Europe was created in 1949 to defend Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law and currently includes 46 member states, including all the countries that make up the EU.
