Syrian first lady Asma Assad has been diagnosed with breast cancer, the office of President Bashar Assad announced Tuesday, according to the AP .

The president’s wife was diagnosed with malignant breast cancer “after experiencing several symptoms and after undergoing a comprehensive series of medical tests and examinations,” the statement said.

Asma Assad will “adhere to a specialized treatment protocol that includes strict measures of prevention of infection” and “will temporarily withdraw from all of her direct commitments” as part of her treatment plan, it added.

Asma Assad has previously battled breast cancer. In August 2019, she announced that she was “completely free” of the disease, a year after her diagnosis.

Born and raised in the United Kingdom, though her family is from central Syria, the first lady is a powerful and polarizing figure. She is under Western sanctions and has been a highly controversial figure throughout the course of the Syrian conflict.

She has taken on a public role leading charity efforts and meeting with the families of fallen soldiers, but she has also become a hate figure for the opposition.

She runs the Syria Trust for Development, a large NGO that acts as an umbrella organization for many of Syria’s aid and development operations.
