The funeral ceremonies for Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi began in the northwestern city of Tabriz on Tuesday morning.

The Iranian head of state died in a helicopter crash on Sunday.

According to state television, thousands of people have gathered in the centre of the capital of East Azerbaijan province to pay their respects to Raisi.

Speaking to Sky News at the scene, Tehran resident Hasti Amiri said that "from the moment" she heard the news she was "worried about what was going to happen to us, to him, to our country".

She said that after hearing of Raisi's death "everyone was devastated".

Another resident, Mohammad Beheshti, told the British broadcaster that he was sad to lose such a powerful leader.

"We were shocked about losing such a figure, a figure who made Iran proud and humiliated the enemies. Especially in the past month we saw how his power humiliated Israel and America, and how Iran was raised to greatness," he said.

Iranian rescue teams on Monday morning recovered the remains of Ebrahim Raisi and the eight other people on board the helicopter that crashed in north-western Iran on Sunday.

The helicopter, which was also carrying Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, came down in the Kalibar and Varzaqan area of East Azerbaijan province, in the north-west of the country.

The Iranian government has confirmed Raisi's death, but said the crash will not cause "any disruption to the administration" of the country.

First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber has been appointed as interim head of state.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has declared five days of mourning following the death of Ebrahim Raisi.
