La Tontouta airport in Noumea has been closed to commercial flights since May 14 due to the blockades and violence that have rocked the French overseas territory in the South Pacific for the past week.

Between May 14 and 25, flight cancellations by Aircalin, one of the airlines operating in Noumea and 99% owned by the local government, "represent a total of 85 flights and (affect) nearly ten thousand passengers," Aircalin said in a statement.

The first flights are due to take place today to evacuate tourists stranded in the Oceanian archipelago, which has been the scene of a pro-independence revolt since an electoral reform was passed in Paris.

The measure allows foreign residents who have been living in the archipelago for ten years to take part in the electoral process, which has angered local political forces who fear greater control from Paris.

Australia and New Zealand, in particular, have been trying for several days to repatriate their hundreds of nationals stranded in the archipelago.

Today, the two countries announced that they would be sending several flights to the territory's capital.

New Zealand's Foreign Minister Winston Peters said the government had chartered a flight to Noumea.

The plane, which left late this morning, is expected to repatriate fifty New Zealand citizens.

Two other planes are due to leave Australia today to evacuate "Australian tourists and others", added her Australian counterpart Penny Wong.

One of the planes has already landed in New Caledonia, according to a journalist from Agence France Presse.
