One passenger has died and more than 30 were injured when a flight from London Heathrow to Singapore hit "severe turbulence" on Tuesday morning.

"Singapore Airlines flight SQ321 operating from London to Singapore encountered severe turbulence during its descent. We are saddened to confirm that there has been one fatality and several injuries onboard," Singapore Airlines said in a statement on social media.

The Boeing 777-300ER was diverted to Bangkok and landed in the Thai capital at 3.45pm local time (8am UK), the BBC reports.

"Singapore Airlines extends its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased passenger," the statement added.

The airline said it was "working with the local authorities in Bangkok to provide the necessary medical assistance" to the passengers.

There were 211 passengers and 18 crew on board.
