Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has called the International Criminal Court's (ICC) decision to issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over the Israeli-Hamas conflict "absurd and shameful."

"The ICC Prosecutor's proposal against Prime Minister Netanyahu is absurd and shameful. Such initiatives will not bring the Middle East closer to peace, but only fuel further tensions", the Hungarian leader wrote in a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

ICC prosecutor Karim Khan on Monday requested arrest warrants for Netanyahu and his defense minister, Yoav Gallant, as well as three Hamas leaders: Yahya Sinwar, Ismail Haniyeh and Mohamed Deif, for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during Hamas' May 7 attacks and the subsequent Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip.

In retaliation, Israel has since launched a large-scale offensive in the Palestinian territory, which has so far killed more than 35,000 people, mostly civilians, according to the Hamas government, and caused a severe humanitarian crisis.

Among the crimes the prosecutor accuses the two Israeli officials of are using starvation as a "method of warfare" against civilians and "willful killing," while he holds the Hamas leaders responsible for the deaths of hundreds of Israeli civilians.

Israel is not a party to the court, like the United States, so it is not obligated to follow its orders.
