In a statement, Agnès Callamard, secretary-general of the non-governmental organization, considered that "no one is above international law: neither leaders of armed groups, nor government officials - elected or not, nor military officers".

In the eighth month of the war in the Gaza Strip, ICC prosecutor Karim Khan requested on Monday arrest warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu and his defense minister, Yoav Gallant, as well as for three Hamas leaders, for alleged crimes against humanity.

Khan justified the request for arrest warrants for the Israeli leaders for crimes such as "deliberately starving civilians", "intentional homicide" and "extermination and/or death".

The accusations against the Hamas leaders, including its leader in Gaza, Yahya Sinouar, include "extermination", "rape and other forms of sexual violence" and "taking hostages as a war crime".

"This action by the ICC Prosecutor sends an important message to all parties involved in the conflict in Gaza and beyond, that they will be held accountable for the devastation they have caused to the populations of Gaza and Israel", added the head of Amnesty International.

Agnès Callamard also defended that "all States must respect the legitimacy" of the ICC, namely by refraining from trying to "intimidate or pressure the court".

The current conflict in the Gaza Strip was triggered by the unprecedented attack by Palestinian Islamists from Hamas on Israeli soil on October 7, 2023, which caused around 1,200 deaths and two hundred hostages, according to the Israeli authorities.

In response, Israel launched a large-scale military offensive in the Gaza Strip, which has already caused more than 35,000 deaths, mostly civilians, according to local authorities controlled by Hamas.
