The minibus, which was carrying 26 young people aged between 17 and 25 to the farm where they worked, was on a 'ferryboat' that was crossing in the area of Monshaet al Qanater, in the province of Giza.
A "sudden technical failure" of the boat's fastening system caused the vehicle to fall into the water, a security source told the local newspaper Al Shorouk, quoted by the Spanish agency EFE.
According to the source, the security forces, with the help of the population, managed to rescue several young people, including two injured who were taken to a hospital.
Later, the Ministry of Health specified that eight young people had been rescued alive.
The search for the three girls still missing in the waters off Abu Ghaleb, northwest of Cairo, continued some time after the accident.
At the scene, there were eight ambulances, security authorities and maritime rescue teams working with divers.
The minibus was recovered from the water and will be handed over to a technical commission for examination and evaluation.
According to the Public Prosecutor's Office, preliminary investigations revealed that the driver of the minibus had "a verbal argument" with one of the people on the boat.
After the argument, "he left the vehicle without checking the safety of the brakes, which caused a failure and caused the minibus to fall into the water of the Nile River".
Giza security services arrested the minibus driver, according to the newspaper Al Shorouk.
The young women were from a village in the center of Ashmoun, in the province of Menoufia, northwest of Cairo, and worked for a fruit exporting company.
