"Armed bandits on motorbikes invaded Zurak village, shooting sporadically and burning houses," Plateau state commissioner for information, Musa Ibrahim Ashoms, told AFP by phone.
"As of now, about 40 people have been confirmed dead," he added.
A local youth leader, Shafi'i Sambo, also confirmed to AFP that at least 42 people had been killed in the attack.
The inhabitants of Zurak village, where the attack took place, live mainly from mining activities.
The region is known for its large reserves of tin, zinc and lead, which have attracted investment from Nigerian and foreign companies.
Illegal mining activities are widespread, often leading to tensions and frequent inter-communal violence.
Situated in the dividing line between Nigeria's mainly Muslim north and predominantly Christian south, Plateau has also been the scene of repeated bouts of violence triggered by conflicts between nomadic herders and sedentary farmers.
Climate change has also contributed to rising tensions over access to resources -- notably land, water and minerals.
Parts of northwest and central-north Nigeria are also terrorised by criminal gangs who raid villages and carry out mass kidnappings for ransom.
