The town of Huétor Tájar, in Granada, Spain, remains in shock after the murder of two children aged 10 and 12 at the hands of their grandfather.

The 72-year-old man had barricaded himself in the house and ended up killing the children before taking his own life.

The officers entered the house around 8:25 am, after verifying that there was no movement in the house, when the elderly man committed suicide, and found the bodies of the children in two different rooms, one of them with a gunshot wound.

Several neighbors alerted 112, around 9:45 pm, to the fact that there were moments of tension and "conflict" in the house between the grandfather and the children's father. According to El Correo de Andalucía, the grandfather had argued with his son-in-law, at whom he pointed a gun, for not letting him see his grandchildren.

At that moment, the man left the house, where the elderly man barricaded himself with the children. Upon the arrival of the officers, the grandfather fired two shots into the air from the window to warn that he was armed, which immediately led the Armed Forces to activate the protocol.

Before eleven o'clock at night, the father received a phone call from his grandfather's cell phone: it was his eldest son. The boy asked his father if he could sleep at his grandfather's house: "Dad, can I sleep with Grandpa?". This was the last communication between father and son.

Although the man agreed, during the phone call, that the grandchildren would stay at home to try to buy time to recover the children, he was unable to contact them again.

The authorities' contact with the grandfather was interrupted around 5 am, when the man told the officers that he could not continue talking because he had to get the children ready for school soon.

The officers waited for this milestone to materialize, using the technological means at their disposal to listen and make visible, as much as possible, what could be happening inside the house. However, it was eight o'clock in the morning and the children had not yet left for school.

Seeing that they were not leaving, the officers decided that they had to go in. It was when they entered that the grandfather committed suicide and discovered the two minors dead.
