"Dramatic landing". Young man remembers fatal Singapore Airlines flight

A young man, 28, on board a Singapore Airlines flight in which one person died and dozens were injured in severe turbulence, has told how the plane went into a "dramatic drop" and passengers were thrown around.
Speaking to Reuters, Malaysian student Dzafran Azmir recalled how the incident happened about three hours from the end of the flight from London to Singapore.
Dzafran said he felt the Boeing 777-300ER lurch upwards and begin to shake. He had his seatbelt fastened, but many other passengers did not.
"Suddenly there was a very dramatic drop and all those who were sitting down and not wearing their seatbelts were thrown up immediately and hit the ceiling, some people hit their heads on the overhead luggage compartment and dented it, hit the light and the oxygen masks and the compartment came down," Dzafran said.
"People fell on the floor, my phone flew out of my hand and went a few rows back, people's shoes were flying everywhere," he added.
Thirty people were injured and a 73-year-old British man died, according to The New York Times. The plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Bangkok.
"The cabin crew and those who were in the toilets were the ones who were most affected because we found people lying on the floor who couldn't get up. There were a lot of back and head injuries," said the student, who said paramedics boarded the plane when it landed.
"I don't think they anticipated the severity of the situation," he said, explaining that it took 90 minutes to evacuate the plane.
There were 211 passengers and 18 crew on board, the airline said.
