A 91-year-old man has surprised a fire department in Calhoun, Missouri, in the United States, with a $500,000 donation (about 460,000 euros).

According to local television network KMBC 9, Sam Sloan - who has lived in the county since 1960 - wanted to help the local fire department, which still uses equipment from the 1980s.

"I'm going to give the fire department a donation. I've been planning this for several years. It's half a million dollars, and half a million dollars is a hell of a donation," Sloan told KMBC 9.

In the same statements, the elderly man admitted that he was receiving "a lot of credit" for the feat. "I don't know how to fix one of those things [fire trucks]. But I know how to make a dollar," he also joked.

The commander of the awarded corporation, Mark Hardin, assured that the first thing that will be done is "replace the tanker truck's pump", which has been repaired 17 times in the last year.

"Every one of our firefighters, from head to toe, will see the measures to receive new equipment," he added.

Hardin was thrilled with the reception of this generous 'gift'. "Never in a million years would I expect something like this for a rural fire department," he said.
