"It is with heavy hearts that we have received the devastating news of the passing of our much-loved colleague and friend Geoff Kitchen in the recent Singapore Airlines flight incident," a post on Thornbury Musical Theatre Group's Facebook page said, according to the BBC.
"Geoff was a true gentleman of the highest honesty and integrity who always did the right thing for the society," it added, saying he had been involved with the group in various roles for 35 years. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and family at this difficult time, and we ask that their privacy is respected," it added. The UK Foreign Office has said it is "supporting" the family of the victim and is "in contact with the local authorities".
The Singapore Airlines flight from London to Singapore hit severe turbulence and was diverted to Bangkok, the airline said on Tuesday.
The Boeing 777-300ER, operating as SQ321 from London to Singapore, landed at Suvarnabhumi Airport in the Thai capital during the afternoon local time. The plane was carrying 211 passengers and 18 crew and emergency services rushed to the scene.
Meanwhile, Boeing, the US manufacturer of the aircraft involved, said it was in contact with Singapore Airlines and offered support. "We extend our deepest condolences to the family who lost a loved one, and our thoughts are with the passengers and crew," Boeing said in a statement following the incident involving the 16-year-old plane.Singapore Airlines said the flight had been hit by "severe unexpected turbulence" over the Irrawaddy basin in Myanmar at 37,000ft (11,300m), about 10 hours after take-off. "As of 1950hrs Singapore time on 21 May 2024, 18 people have been taken to hospital. Another 12 are being attended to at the clinics. The remaining passengers and crew are being assessed and provided with refreshments as needed at Suvarnabhumi Airport, Bangkok," it said, offering its "deepest condolences to the family of the deceased".
The airline said it was assisting the Thai authorities and had sent a team to Bangkok to help. Singapore's transport ministry has also sent investigators to Thailand following the incident.
Speaking to Reuters, a 28-year-old man who was on board the plane described a "dramatic drop" which threw passengers around.
Pictures from inside the aircraft show large gashes in the cabin panels, oxygen masks and overhead panels hanging down and scattered hand luggage.
