"A climate-neutral electricity system needs flexibility. That's why we are not only expanding our electricity grids in Germany, but are also seeking connections with our neighbours," Habeck stressed at the ceremony in Wilhelmshaven in northern Germany. "This connection is a contribution to cross-border decarbonisation and security of supply," he added. The 720-kilometre NeuConnect will link the British and German power grids, also running through the Netherlands before crossing the North Sea with submarine cables. The German section will be 193 kilometres long. According to the German economy ministry, NeuConnect will contribute to security of supply in both countries with a capacity of 1.4 gigawatts (GW) and could supply 1.5 million households with electricity. It is scheduled to go into operation in 2028 and will be financed by an international consortium. Germany and the UK share the goal of becoming climate neutral by mid-century and, in a joint declaration of intent on November 3, pledged to intensify their cooperation in the energy sector.
