The idea was presented today by the French Minister for European Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot, upon arriving at a General Affairs Council, which includes a point on foreign interference in the run-up to the elections for the European Parliament.
Barrot indicated that the aim is to "fight disinformation, by creating a democratic shield for Europe, which supports detection, treatment and immunisation".
He also said that the detection of disinformation content and propaganda operations should be done "with the support of a free and independent press" and with experts.
For his part, the treatment would consist of "suppressing accounts" that contribute to disinformation, added the minister, who also mentioned the application of sanctions to the authors of the propaganda, "in accordance with the law".
Finally, Barrot spoke of the development of a "collective immunisation", with the reinforcement in the Member States of "critical thinking, critical education", as well as an "authentic European information platform".
