Several people have died and homes, cars and trees were destroyed after a powerful tornado tore through Greenfield, Iowa, in the US.

Greenfield’s hospital was among the buildings damaged in the city, forcing at least a dozen people to be taken to other facilities, Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Alex Dinkla told the Associated Press.

“Unfortunately, we can confirm that we do have fatalities,” Dinkla said at a news conference Tuesday night, but he did not specify how many. “We’re still accounting for people at this time,” he added.

Adair County Health System said in a Facebook post Tuesday night that a triage center had been set up at the Greenfield High School and that people seeking medical attention should go there.

The tornado tore through much of Greenfield, which is about 55 miles (90 kilometers) southwest of Des Moines. In the storm’s aftermath, piles of splintered lumber, branches, car parts and other debris covered the ground where homes once stood. Some trees that were still standing had lost most of their branches and leaves.

After hitting the town of about 2,000 people, the storm moved east into parts of Illinois and Wisconsin, leaving more than 130,000 customers without power.
