Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will "visit the Islamic Republic of Iran today to offer condolences on the sad demise" of Raisi "on behalf of the people and government of Pakistan," the Pakistani foreign ministry said in a statement. Pakistan's foreign ministry added that Sharif will lead a high-level delegation and is expected to meet Khamenei as well as Iran's interim President Mohammad Mokhber. Pakistan on Monday declared a day of mourning over the death of Raisi and Iran's interior minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, in a helicopter crash in the country's northwest. The Taliban government in Afghanistan will also send a delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar and Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). Under Raisi, Iran was one of the few countries keen on improving ties with the Taliban when they took over Afghanistan in 2021, despite occasional border incidents. Funeral ceremonies began in the capital on Tuesday with Khamenei leading morning prayers for Raisi at Tehran University, followed by a procession through the city streets. Mohammad Mokhber wept openly during the religious service, which was attended by thousands of people, including the political leader of the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh. A ceremony later in the day is expected to be attended by foreign dignitaries, including Indian Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. Iranian rescue teams on Monday morning recovered the bodies of Raisi and the eight other people on board the helicopter that went down on Sunday, the Red Crescent aid organisation said. The helicopter crashed in the mountainous area of Kalibar and Varzaqan in East Azerbaijan province, in the northwest of the country. The Iranian government has declared five days of mourning but said the disaster will not cause "any disruption to the administration" of the country. Read Also: Iran.
