The Department of the Interior of the Generalitat (the institutional system in which the self-government of Catalonia is politically organized) sanctioned a police officer in April last year for acting as coordinator of the Vox security service during an event in Girona, Spain.

According to El País, the officer carried out this work outside his working hours and without remuneration and was sanctioned for a very serious offense, with a one-year and one-day suspension of employment and salary.

After an investigation, the Internal Affairs Division (DAI) considered that the police officer, Carlos Pérez, was carrying out an activity incompatible with that of a public official and that it compromised the "impartiality and independence of the force". Pérez argues that he was a "volunteer", who is not subject to any authorization, and denounces that the Generalitat applies double standards when it guarantees that the police officers who escorted former president Carles Puigdemont in France can do whatever they want on their days off.

The investigation of Pérez, an officer assigned to the area of citizen security in Girona, began in March 2021. The regional elections were approaching and, since November of the previous year, the police officer had taken on the task of coordinating with the Vox security agents. His function, as a member of the party, was to communicate "public events, rallies, itineraries and movements" of Vox leaders in Girona. Previously, the head of the party's security department himself informed the Mossos, by email, that they would be in contact with Pérez. The fluid communications were interrupted four months later, when an investigation was opened. According to the proceedings, Pérez's superiors insisted that he request authorization. But he refused: "It is not logical to ask for authorization to carry out an activity in my free time, which is supported by the Constitution," he insists, adding that at no time did he escort or provide security to politicians.

A year after the investigation, internal affairs concluded that it was "evident that his activity as security coordinator" of Vox had the "objective of guaranteeing the security of the party's public events" in Girona. In their argument, they considered that this work "compromises the impartiality and independence" of the police officer in Girona.
