"As a result of the enemy attack, Sumy is without electricity," the head of the Sumy region military administration, Oleksiy Drozdenko, wrote on Telegram.
The regional military administration earlier reported that Russian drones had hit energy infrastructure facilities in two cities in the region. According to the Sumy city administration, electricity and water supply have been partially restored in the city. The city council also reported that seven Iranian-made Shahed drones launched by Russia had been shot down over the Sumy region overnight. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Ukrainian air defence forces destroyed 24 Russian drones over Sumy and other regions in eastern, southern and central Ukraine between Tuesday night and Wednesday. Although intercepted in the air, the wreckage of these drones sometimes falls on residential areas or infrastructure, causing destruction and fires. Russia has been attacking Ukraine with Iranian-made Shahed drones almost every night. These are relatively cheap unmanned aerial vehicles capable of hitting targets at a long distance. Since March, the Ukrainian energy sector has been one of the main targets of Russian shelling of Ukraine, with much of its electricity generation capacity destroyed in massive Russian strikes on power plants. Ukraine’s state-owned electricity transmission company Ukrenergo warned Ukrainians on Wednesday that power cuts, which have already been introduced to save electricity, could increase this summer due to increased consumption in hot weather. To mitigate the electricity deficit, Ukraine has been importing record amounts of electricity from neighbouring countries. However, this is not enough to provide uninterrupted supply to the population, businesses and other consumers.
