"I greet with great satisfaction the important step that Norway, Ireland and Spain have decided to take on the recognition of the State of Palestine", said Abul Gheit on social network X, stressing that these countries are placing themselves "on the right side of History of this conflict".

"I ask all the countries that have not yet done so (the recognition of the State of Palestine), to follow the example of these three countries in their courageous and principled step. I congratulate Palestine for this positive development", concluded the Secretary-General of the Arab League, an organisation created in 1945 and currently with 22 members.

Ireland, Spain and Norway announced today that they will recognise the State of Palestine on 28 May. This decision led Israel to call its ambassadors in these three countries for consultations.

Today's announcement means that Palestine will now be recognised by 11 member states of the European Union, as Spain and Ireland will join Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Romania, Sweden and Slovakia.

At the United Nations, 137 of the 193 member states of the organisation have already unilaterally recognised the State of Palestine, according to the Palestinian National Authority.

The announcement was made in the midst of the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, which began more than seven months ago.
