The operating licenses of radio stations FIM FM, Radio Espace FM, Sweet FM, Djoma FM and television station Djoma TV have been revoked, the Information Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.
The statement cited "non-compliance with the specifications of the contract" as the reason for the measure, without providing further details. The ban comes amid a broader crackdown on the media by the military junta that has been in power since 2021. Since November 2023, four private radio stations have been subject to constant blocking, three private television channels have been largely inaccessible, and at least three online news portals were blocked for several weeks without explanation in 2023, the NGO Reporters Without Borders (RSF) said on its website. "The repression of the media must stop," the NGO said on social media, recalling that the Guinean military authorities had pledged to unblock "an already dramatic situation" for the media. In late 2023 and early 2024, the authorities also imposed restrictions on internet access and detained a union leader of the press for more than a month, triggering a general strike. The country is ranked 78th out of 180 countries in RSF's 2024 press freedom index.
