At his daily press briefing, Guterres’ spokesman Stephane Dujarric was asked several questions about the announcement by the three European countries and its possible impact on the war in Gaza, but he largely demurred: “I will leave it to others to speculate on what the effects of those actions will be.” For the UN, he said, the priorities remain securing a ceasefire, speeding up the delivery of humanitarian aid and securing the release of the hostages held by Hamas, as well as the longer-term goal of a two-State solution -- Israel and Palestine -- “living side by side in peace and security, with the right to self-determination,” Dujarric said. Referring to Israel’s reaction to the European announcement, the spokesman said that the request for consultations from the three ambassadors in Madrid, Dublin and Oslo was “a bilateral matter,” but he did criticize Israel’s withholding of tax revenues that partly fund the Palestinian Authority, saying that “it is important that the Palestinian Authority receives the revenues that are due to it.” While Dujarric was circumspect on the issue, the question of Palestinian recognition by the three European countries was very much in the air at the UN on Tuesday, with the Palestinian envoy, Riyad Mansour, posing for a celebratory photograph outside the Security Council with the Spanish, Norwegian and Irish ambassadors.
