The U.S. and Saudi Arabia could seal a defense and energy deal within weeks, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Tuesday, with implications for normalizing relations between Israel and the Arab kingdom.

"These agreements are very close to being finalized. We will of course submit them to Congress for review, but we could be a matter of weeks away from finalizing them," the top US diplomat told a House of Representatives committee hearing.
In addition to this cooperation agreement between Washington and Riyadh, Blinken argued that in order to achieve normalization of relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia, it will be necessary to end the war in the Gaza Strip and achieve a "credible path" to peace.
The administration of US President Joe Biden has not made public the details of the "mega-deal", which aims to ensure that Saudi Arabia and Israel establish diplomatic relations, and which was put on the back burner after the October 7 attack by the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas on Israel and the start of the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip.
White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and Saudi Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman met over the weekend in Saudi Arabia to give new impetus to the negotiations.
According to the US press, the cooperation agreement with the United States would allow Riyadh, which rivals Iran in the region, lasting access to advanced US weapons, without its transfer being interrupted by diplomatic incidents.
Saudi Arabia has also pressed for the agreement to allow it to enrich uranium, although Washington may impose some conditions to avoid opening up a possible nuclear weapons program.
In exchange for these concessions, Saudi Arabia would agree to limit Chinese technology in its most sensitive networks.
Once they reach an agreement, the next step will be to get Israel to agree to create a Palestinian state and end the war in the Gaza Strip, although Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is opposed.
