Exactly two-thirds of the 695 tons of food that were unloaded at the floating dock installed by the United States have been sent or are in the process of being distributed to the Palestinian population, White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said at a press conference.

The adviser to US President Joe Biden explained that the problem is not transporting the food to land once it arrives at the dock, but rather guaranteeing the necessary security measures for its distribution, a task that is mostly carried out by the specialized UN agencies on the ground.

On Tuesday, the Pentagon had acknowledged at a press conference that the aid had not yet reached the inhabitants of Gaza.

The United Nations agencies mainly responsible for distributing the aid on the ground had suspended deliveries this week, after several altercations at the dock and until the logistical and security difficulties for the personnel involved were resolved.

The goal of the US Department of Defense is to move about 500 tons per day through the provisional infrastructure, without any American workers having to set foot in the Gaza Strip, which has been the scene of a war between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas for over seven months.

On October 7 of last year, Israel declared war on the Gaza Strip to "eradicate" Hamas after it had carried out an unprecedented attack on Israeli territory hours earlier, killing more than 1,170 people, mostly civilians.

The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) -- in power in Gaza since 2007 and classified as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union and Israel -- also took 252 hostages, 124 of whom remain in captivity and 37 have since died, according to the latest assessment by the Israeli army.

The war, which entered its 229th day today and continues to threaten to spread to the entire Middle East region, has so far caused more than 35,700 deaths in the Gaza Strip, about 80,000 wounded and 10,000 missing, presumably buried in the rubble, mostly civilians, according to updated figures from local authorities.

The conflict has also caused almost two million displaced persons, plunging the overcrowded and poor Palestinian enclave into a serious humanitarian crisis, with more than 1.1 million people in a "catastrophic hunger situation" that is claiming victims - "the highest number ever recorded" by the UN in studies on food security in the world.
