U.S. health officials said Wednesday that a second human case of bird flu in the United States has been detected in a person who had exposure to infected poultry and cattle.
The case was identified in Michigan and involves a man who worked on a farm and had regular exposure to infected animals, according to the Associated Press . The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the man was being monitored because of his exposure to the infected animals. An initial sample tested negative for bird flu, but a second sample sent to the CDC came back positive, confirming that the man had been infected. This is the second human case of bird flu in the country in about two months, after the first case was detected in a person in Colorado in April. No further information about the man was released, and U.S. health officials said he has since recovered. After the first human case was detected in Colorado, the World Health Organization recommended that people in the U.S. only consume pasteurized milk because of concerns about the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus being found in U.S. commercial poultry flocks.

The World Health Organization (WHO) today recommended that people in the United States only consume pasteurized milk after highly pathogenic H5N1 viruses were found in commercial poultry flocks.

The CDC reiterated that the risk to the general public remains low, noting that the first human case also involved a poultry worker who had contact with infected birds. “This virus is being closely monitored and, to date, we have not seen any evidence of sustained human-to-human transmission. This is exactly how public health is supposed to work, with early detection and monitoring of novel and emerging diseases,” health officials said in a statement, adding that they are working to better understand how to protect these workers.
