In a statement, the body ordered the negotiating team to resume its work, which had been interrupted on May 10, after an attempt at an agreement in Cairo that Israel rejected.
The decision comes after Egypt threatened to withdraw as a mediator in the conflict between Israel and Hamas on Wednesday due to accusations of having mishandled the last round of negotiations, which failed, according to The Times of Israel.
"Attempts to cast doubt and offend Egypt's mediation efforts (...) will only lead to further complications of the situation in Gaza and the entire region and will prompt Egypt to completely withdraw from mediating the conflict," said Diaa Rashwan, who acts as spokesperson for the Egyptian government.
The Cabinet thus opens the door to a new round of negotiations, which have been at a standstill since May 10, when both Israel and Hamas withdrew their delegations from Cairo, after failing to reach an agreement on the proposal for a ceasefire and exchange of hostages for prisoners presented by the Islamic organization and the mediators.
Hamas then accused Israel of returning the negotiations "to square one", while the Israeli authorities said that the Islamists had modified essential issues in the proposed agreement after having already accepted it.
Of the 253 kidnapped on October 7, 124 remain in the enclave, 40 of them dead according to Israel and more than 70 according to Hamas, although there are four other people who have been held hostage for years, two of whom have died.
Since the beginning of the war, Israel and Hamas have only reached a one-week truce agreement at the end of November, which allowed for the release of 105 hostages in exchange for 240 Palestinian prisoners.
In addition, four hostages were released by Hamas in October, three were rescued by the Army -- two of them a few weeks ago in a successful operation in Rafah -- while the bodies of 17 were recovered, three of whom were killed by mistake by Israeli troops.
