"An attack hit a private company. According to initial information, there is one dead, six wounded" and three missing, said Kharkiv mayor Igor Terekhov on social media, also reporting the occurrence of "a large fire".

About 11,000 people have been forced to leave their homes in the Kharkiv region since the Russian ground offensive launched on May 10 in that border area, the local governor said today.

"In total, 10,980 people were evacuated" from that area, said Oleg Synegubov, governor of Kharkiv, on the social network Telegram.

Thousands of people fled their homes as the Russian army quickly captured several border villages at the start of its surprise offensive towards Lyptsi and Vovchansk, forcing Kiev to rush to deploy reinforcements.

"Fighting continues" in the Vovchansk region, a city that had about 18,000 inhabitants before the war and is located just five kilometers from the border with Russia, the Ukrainian General Staff said in a statement.

"Our defenders are reacting well," added the note from the Ukrainian military.

Ukraine is having "noticeable results" in the face of the Russian offensive in that region, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky assured on Tuesday.

Zelensky said last week, in an interview with the AFP news agency, that this could be the "first wave" of a broader Russian offensive, in particular to try to take Kharkiv, the second city of Ukraine.
