A two-year-old child is among 40 people still in hospital in Thailand after a London to Singapore flight was forced to make an emergency landing due to severe turbulence on Tuesday.

Of the 40 still in hospital, half are in intensive care, according to the director of Bangkok's Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital, quoted by the BBC. Most have spinal or back injuries but there are also head and brain injuries and muscle damage.

Seventeen people have had surgery, nine of them for spinal injuries, said medic Adinun Kittiratanapaibool, while the two-year-old is being treated for concussion.

The patients come from Australia, Britain, Hong Kong, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore and the Philippines.

One British national, named as Geoff Kirchen, 73, died in the incident, reportedly from a cardiac arrest.

The incident happened on Tuesday when the Singapore Airlines Boeing 777-300ER was forced to make an emergency landing in the Thai capital after hitting severe turbulence mid-air. There were 211 passengers and 18 crew on board, according to the airline.

Singapore's transport ministry has said it will send investigators to Thailand to look into the incident.
