Nepalese Phunjo Lama broke the record for the fastest ascent of Mount Everest by a woman on Thursday, reaching the summit in 14 hours and 31 minutes.

Climbers typically reach the top of the 8,849-meter (29,032-foot) mountain over several days, stopping at camps along the way to rest. But Lama, who is in her 30s, shaved more than 11 hours off the previous record, set in 2021.

"She started [from the base camp] at 3:52 pm on May 22 and reached the summit at 6:23 am on May 23," Khim Lal Gautam, head of the tourism department's liaison office at the base camp, told AFP.

The climber previously held the record for the fastest female ascent in 2018, when she reached the summit in 39 hours and six minutes. That record was later broken by Hong Kong's Ada Tsang Yin-hung in 2021, who climbed the mountain in 25 hours and 50 minutes.

The overall record for the fastest ascent of Everest is held by Nepali climber Lhakpa Gelu Sherpa, who reached the summit in 10 hours and 56 minutes in 2003.

Nepal has issued more than 900 permits to climb its mountains this season, including 419 for Everest, generating more than $5 million in revenue.

Last year, more than 600 climbers summitted Mount Everest. However, 18 people died during the season, making it the deadliest on record.
